Doctor's Biography

the Doctor

Dr. Corcoran has a Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Houston, a Master of Science Degree from California University of PA, a Bachelor of Science degree from Lock Haven University of PA, and a Teaching Certificate from King's College. Dr. Corcoran is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, member of the College of Optometrist in Vision Development, member of the Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired, and member of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States. Dr. Corcoran received therapeutic training and laser education at Northeastern State University, Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Prior to private practice, Dr. Corcoran served on active duty in the United States Air Force at the Keesler Medical Center, Biloxi, Mississippi and served as Director of Extern Training, Adjunct Associate Professor for the University of Houston, Director of Low Vision Services and Director of Contact Lens Services. As a teacher, Dr. Corcoran understands the importance of vision in a childs ability to learn.

the Officer

Lt. Colonel Corcoran is an officer in the Medical Group of the 175th Maryland Air Guard, Baltimore, and was the U.S. Air Guard Outstanding Optometrist of the Year 2001. Lt. Colonel Corcoran is both optometrist and Unit Mobility Officer. As an eye doctor, Lt. Colonel Corcoran maintains the peak visual performance of aircrew members of the C-130J Hercules. He has had duty throughout the world receiving the best training including therapeutic and laser procedures. As Mobility Officer, Lt. Colonel Corcoran is responsible for predeployment and deployment actions ensuring that personnel assigned to mobility positions met medical readiness requirements to fulfill military demands in any theater of operation, be it peacetime or wartime, and in any contingency. The Air National Guard has provided worldwide humanitarian relief and global military support. Lt. Colonel Corcoran was deployed to New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina Relief with the 193rd of Harrisburg, to Peru and Bosnia with the 175th MDG of Baltimore and to Estonia with NATO forces on board the USNS Comfort.

the Educator

Dr. Corcoran is certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (CTVI). He received his pedagogical training from King's College and his vision training from the University of Houston. Dr. Corcoran completed clinical rotations in the Low Vision and Pediatric Clinics. His externship includes the Richmond State School for the Mentally Retarded and the Houston Lighthouse for the Blind. Dr. Corcoran taught school at Wyoming Seminary, the Marine Military Academy and the Hazelton Area Career Center. He now helps visually impaired and blind students achieve academic success with the HASD Special Education Department and Early Intervention Program. Vision accounts for 90% of all learning. As a result, visually handicapped students have special needs that required comprehensive and expert understanding of learning and visual function.
